About the firm · founded 1997

Public Media's People.

Livingston Associates was founded in 1997 to do one thing well: help public-media organizations find, develop, and keep the leaders they need. Nearly three decades later, that focus has not changed, and our conviction behind it has only deepened.

Mission

Livingston Associates serves public-media stations, universities, and mission-based nonprofits in three closely linked disciplines: executive search, strategic planning, and leadership coaching.

We measure our work by a single standard: whether the organization is demonstrably stronger several years after an engagement concludes. That standard governs the partners we accept, the candidates we recommend, and the advice we give.

Value proposition

Every Livingston engagement is led by a senior partner who serves as your single point of accountability from kickoff through start date, and is never reassigned to a junior associate. Deep knowledge of the field, built over nearly three decades of work in public media, is the firm's first and most important difference.

Our second difference is method. We treat every assignment as a question to be answered with the client, not delivered to them. Drawing on the principle of collective intelligence, we design search committees, strategy retreats, and coaching engagements so the best thinking in the room reaches the decision.

History

When Livingston Associates incorporated in 1997, no firm was offering comprehensive executive search to public radio. We built that practice from the ground up, and the field's leading resume database alongside it. Since then, we have led more than 400 searches for stations, networks, and licensee universities, with over 175 at the executive level.

Beyond search, the firm has led landmark strategic studies for the field, including foundational work on joint-licensee operations, cross-platform promotion, and the financial sustainability of mid-market stations.

Diversity

Inclusive recruiting is rigorous recruiting.

Public media exists to serve every community in its signal area, and the leadership of a station should reflect that obligation. Every Livingston search is designed to surface candidates from across the field: recruiting broadly, applying structured, consistent screening, and partnering with affinity networks in public radio and television. The result is stronger pools, better hires, and stations more deeply rooted in the communities they serve.
